60th Anniversary Reunion 2024

Our 60th Anniversary Reunion was held on 12th July 2024, and a total of 12 former classmates and 5 spouses managed to attend for most of the day - the schedule of activities is given below.

The University visit included the impressive new buildings which have expanded the campus over the past 10 years.

     7.00pm for 7.30pm - Dinner at the 1051 GWR Restaurant 1051 GWR, 1051 Great Western Rd, Glasgow G12 0XP

The afternoon was most interesting, with a presentation on Quantum Technology by Professor Daniele Faccio, Director of Research, School of Physics and Astronomy, during which he gave an insight to the potential diagnosis of heart abnormalities using a non-invasive laser camera. He followed this with a tour of some of the research labs working on quantum photonics, which are based in the ARC.
This included research activities involving the future use of quantum technology to potentially diagnose brain disorders, using specially-designed helmets.

We then toddled to the Clarice Pears Building, the new home of the School of Health and Wellbeing, where Gillian Bell gave a most interesting description of the work being done there.
The group was impressed with the many interesting internal features and mini-interactive health related demonstrations which are always open to the public.

Our final visit was to the impressive James McCune Smith Building where many were glad to have a coffee just before the cafes closed!
Some of us reached the top floor (using escalators unheard of in a 1964 University Building!!) which afforded a totally new view of the University. (Photo below).

In the evening, we dined at the GWR restaurant, which was perfect for us with a private room and a sunny upstairs balcony where we chatted outside before dinner.

Below are some photographs of the day, including those of our group at the pleasant and enjoyable dinner.

At dinner, Frank Kinghorn gave a welcoming speech and thanked other members of the organising committee for their contribution in making arrangements for the day.
In particular, Peter Macfarlane had made all the arrangements for the University visit, and Hilary Fraser had made the arrangements for the Reunion Dinner.
Finally, Frank
proposed a toast to absent classmates.

Ian Jones had prepared USB memory sticks containing a copy of our Reunion Website and a PowerPoint slide show of photographs from student days and past reunions, and these were presented to classmates for nostalgic viewing offline at home.

Much time was spent during the day, and at dinner, reminiscing over not only the past 5 years, but also over past reunions and the early years of the 1960s, when we were young students together.

Everyone in the small group expressed delight with the reunion, so much so that there was much enthusiasm for an annual event. A more formal reunion in 5 years may be considered in due course!

The Organising Committee for our 60th Anniversary Reunion was: Hilary Fraser, Ian Jones, Frank Kinghorn, Peter Macfarlane, Anne MacKinnon.
All planning meetings were made online using the 'Zoom' facilities of the University, arranged by Peter.
