John C.M. Gibson (Colin) - Deceased 1998 (Entry provided by his widow)
Colin died suddenly in July 1998, leaving a widow, Dorothy, two children and a grandson.
His career path on leaving university was a varied and successful one, joining Seismograph Services in 1964 and working in Nigeria for two years; followed by a spell of chemistry teaching (uncertificated in those days) at Carrick Academy, Maybole, where he became a popular teacher, teaching pupils the art of lemonade making - changed days now!
In 1966 he married Dorothy and joined Stewarts & Lloyds, steel manufacturers in Glasgow, as a computer programmer. This was followed by a move in 1970 to P.A. International Computer Consultants where over the next 25 years as a Principal Consultant in the Systems Division he implemented hardware and software computer systems in many well-known international companies. He was an Associate of the Institute of Management Consultants, and a Member of the British Computer Society.
His interests included golf, squash, bridge and football, but his main passion was sailing, and in his yacht, Petra (a Maxi84) he won many trophies up and down the west coast of Scotland as a member of both Ayr and Troon Yacht Clubs. He won the prestigious Southern Cross Trophy on several occasions.
The week before he died he was the overall winner of the Troon Regatta, taking the main prize for the best performance of the weekend.
The Round Arran Race in August 1998 was named after him as a mark of respect for the contributions he made to the Troon Club as a founder member.
