Eleanor Smith (Sadly Deceased June 2022)
After graduating I spent another year at Glasgow, doing an MSc in Plasma Physics with Ernest Laing, then a year at St Andrews, as an Assistant Lecturer in Applied Mathematics. In September 1966 I married Robert Smith (Maths/Nat Phil 1963), and we both returned to Glasgow as Assistant Lecturers, I in Mathematics and Robert in Astronomy.
We have lived in Lewes in Sussex since 1968, with Robert working at Sussex University, though he has been "retired" since 2006. He still enjoys working with final-year undergraduate project students doing Observational Astrophysics. When we came down to Sussex I taught Maths and Physics in the Boys Grammar School in Brighton, then after I had my children I had various jobs with the Open University, ending up as a Staff Tutor in Mathematics. I retired in January 2008 from full-time work with the Open University, but continued until 2012 teaching part-time students. I now keep my hand in by setting assignment material and marking exam scripts. I still see David Brannan two or three times a year at meetings (he still lives in Bedford).
Our children are now 43 (two of them) and the youngest is 39. Our oldest daughter is working as a midwife in Pakistan, and has been for some time. Her twin lives in Cambridge with her husband and two daughters, aged 13 and 10, and works for the overseas part of Cambridge Assessment. Our youngest daughter lives in Hertfordshire with her husband, a daughter of 8 and a son of 6. She is a lecturer in Geography at Birkbeck College, London.
I became Church Secretary in 2006, a job I am now trying to stop doing, though I will continue to be involved with our Toddlers group (most Friday mornings), and also with the church choir. Robert and I enjoy travelling, and we have had two visits to the Caribbean which we have greatly enjoyed. We still have a caravan, but don't use it as much as I would like, as there are always other things happening. We enjoy spending time with our grandchildren and going to concerts and plays, and we sing in a choir in Lewes.
