50th Anniversary Reunion

Elizabeth Hull

On graduating I went to work for Shell International in London.  In their Computing Department I worked on O.R. and Engineering applications. I was fortunate that about a quarter of my time was spent in Europe, mostly in Paris. While using Shell's impressive sports facilities, I met my husband-to-be, Mike. Work took a back seat with the arrival of our two sons and a 4-year posting for Mike to Nairobi, Kenya.  We had a marvellous time there, making friends with whom we are still in touch, and having wonderful trips up-country in Kenya and in surrounding parts of Africa .

On our return, I went back to the computing world, working for 10 years part- time with a software house. Mike and I have been retired for more than 29 years, and have made one further move since the '89 reunion – still continuing the migration from London towards the border – but at this rate we've no chance of making it in our lifetime! But Harpenden (in Hertfordshire) suits us fine with plenty going on, especially in the music world, so I'm still warbling in the back row of a local choir – a good social crowd with trips abroad etc. There is even a group called Scotslot for those interested in researching their Scots ancestry and I've had fun with them. For quite a few years I helped the Public Record Office, now the National Archives, sorting out probate queries for an index of 17th – 18th century wills – I never thought the Lower Latin would come in useful!

Harpenden has always meant easy access to London for shows, concerts and historical walks, but another bonus to emerge in recent years is that our younger son & family live not far from Brussels, and our local railway line passes through St. Pancras.  It was very kind of Eurostar to move the terminus from Waterloo!

Overseas islands still continue to attract us.  We recently had a marvellous time on the Aeolians, off Sicily.
