Francis C. Kinghorn
I married Nora (Keating) in 1965 (so next year is our Golden Wedding year) and we have four children – Paul, who now lives near Eastbourne; Morag, who lives in Connecticut; Fiona, who is in Hove; and Emma, who is the only one who has not deserted Glasgow. Among them they've given us 7 grandchildren.
After doing a Ph.D. in Medical Physics (in the Dept of Clinical Physics of the Western Regional Hospital Board), I joined the National Engineering Laboratory in East Kilbride in 1968 to work on Fluid Mechanics, specifically Flow Measurement. After a year I joined the SSEB, still doing research on Fluid Mechanics, where I stayed 18 months before re-joining NEL.
I remained there and got the opportunity to travel all over the world, partly to do consultancy work and lecturing but mostly representing the UK in the International Standards Organisation and latterly the EEC (as it was then) developing Standards. NEL moved from being a DTI Industrial Research Establishment through “Next Steps Agency” status to full privatisation in 1995, and I ended up as MD there before taking early retirement in December 2001, followed by 2 years' consultancy for NEL before becoming fully retired. I can't believe that was 10 years ago any more than I can believe it was 50 years ago we all graduated!
My main pastime is golf but I also enjoy playing with the computer and helping friends who have IT problems, spending a fair amount of time at our holiday home in the Costa Blanca, Spain, looking after the Glasgow grandkids and travelling to see the others.
