George K. Rennie
After Glasgow, I escaped to England to Norwich in fact. There I developed a social conscience, a taste for real ale, when I could find it, and a love of sailing on the Norfolk Broads in winter. This of course was curtailed on marriage, particularly with the subsequent production of twin girls.
While in Norwich I wrote a Thesis on X-ray Diffraction for an M.Sc. and one on Cryobiophysics for a Ph.D. I assured Unilever that this qualified me as a colloid chemist. As punishment they sent me to Merseyside and kept me there until 1997 when I took an early retirement package. I ran a small research group developing new detergent products currently toilet cleaners. (Yes a member of the class graduated to become something big in toilets!) I also supervised CASE students and published, e.g. in J. non-N. Fluid Mech, as well as patenting. The job involved a fair amount of travel across Europe .
In 1997 I joined the local education authority to work part time as an Industrial Link Consultant. For the next three years, I worked with pupils of all ages and abilities, teachers, local business and professional associations to promote meetings and joint projects between schools and practising scientists and engineers. It was great fun and very rewarding but unfortunately the E.U. programme funding dried up as did the job.
I now fill my time with the family, keeping the house and garden in shape, holidays, being a member of a family history group, and doing voluntary work with Age Concern.
Since the 2005 reunion, how time has flown! I find myself ever more, rather than less, busy. Some interests continue e.g. as working as a voluntary Trustee of AgeUKWirral and researching my family history. In the last six years I have taken up fell walking and act as walk leader. I also attend the local gym to keep fit to indulge my appetite for walking and travelling. Joining a NADFAS Church Recording Group has revived my passion for photography. And, there is still time to appreciate concerts at the Liverpool Philharmonic.
