| Ian Mclaren After graduating, I continued in the Natural Philosophy faculty in Glasgow to take a PhD in elementary particle physics using the two metre bubble chamber at CERN. Then I joined the Data Division at CERN, where I started to work on the computer programs I had used as a research student. These were interesting years as the laboratory grew rapidly. Over the years my activities became mostly computer programming but latterly contributing to the physics specific software suites CERNLIB and GEANT4.
I took compulsory retirement six years ago and continue to live in Geneva.
When I moved to Geneva in 1969 I enjoyed ten years of adjusting to expatriate life. I married in 1969 and we have three boys aged 24, 20 and 10 and they are all still at home. Family life takes a large part of my leisure time.
As a research student, the University ski club also taught me to ski and this is still one of my favourite winter activities. Although I learned to play squash with my classmates of '64, I have given this up in favour of the more gentle game of tennis. Gardening takes quite some time and is somewhere between a hobby and a chore. I still manage to play some football with the local Scottish community. We also enjoy walking and have the West Highland Way and some easier routes in Skye under our belts.
