| Kenneth W. C. Stewart (Sadly Deceased 17th November 2018)
After graduating I continued at Glasgow University as a research student in theoretical nuclear physics and completed a PhD. Thereafter I did further research in theoretical nuclear spectroscopy at Queen's University, Canada, and Manchester University.
In 1973 I became a Lecturer in Mathematics in Bell College of Technology, Hamilton, (now part of University of the West of Scotland) my principal involvement being in HND work. Later, with the change in nature of the HND, we were also running degree courses. In due course I became Senior Lecturer and after a restructuring of departments, Head of the Department of Mathematics and Physics. This was interesting but when the opportunity of early retirement arose in 1995 I decided to take it, a decision I have not regretted (especially as my successor was soon made redundant). I continued to set the Numerical Analysis part of the Advanced Higher Mathematics and did other occasional work for SQA until 2009.
My outside interest taking most time has been chess both as a player and as an administrator. I am an International Arbiter and am at present Technical Director for Chess Scotland (concerned with rules and arbiters, including running training courses). I was involved in the organisation of the annual Glasgow Congress 1973 - 2008. I have been playing bridge at my golf club for the past ten years.
Since 1983 I have done a fair bit of hill walking and have completed rounds of the Munros (twice), Corbetts and Donalds (I hope twice by June). My interest in meteorology continues. I used to play golf quite well but now can only struggle rather feebly. I have edited a church magazine for the past sixteen years.
