50th Anniversary Reunion

Robert R. Irvine

After graduating, I did two years' research at the University in nuclear physics, ending up with an M.Sc. During this period, I became interested in computing and joined English Electric Leo Marconi as a Systems Programmer in 1967. Later that year I got married and set up home in England, where I have lived ever since.  EELM became ICL in 1968, and I remained with them for 14 years in various positions connected with operating system development.

In 1982, I joined Peterborough Software and remained with them for 18 years through various mergers and de-mergers. I semi-retired in 2001 and now do some IT and Quality Systems Consultancy on a part time basis helping people get more from their IT systems. This gives me plenty of time for golf which I took up in the early nineties.

On the domestic front my son and daughter both obtained PhDs in biological sciences.  My son and family moved to Switzerland in 2008 and both grandsons are now progressing through the Swiss education system that in many ways is superior to the UK. My daughter is a Research Fellow at University College London.
